This is the life: Rumbling along in old fashioned trains on the Romanian Railway. At their peak these old trains must reach speeds of about 60km/hr.
A 100km journey can take up to three hours. But somehow this fits in with the atmosphere in the Transylvanian countryside. Life is slow here. There's no need to rush around amidst the incredible scenery. Endless fertile fields, forested hills and rocky mountainous regions abound as the train squeaks along the tracks.
As we pass other trains along the way dozens of heads and shoulders poke out from old fashioned screw down windows: Passengers trying to get out of the heat of the carriages as there’s no air-conditioning.
There are numerous stops town by town. Often these are small, simple villages. Some with stunning old citadels and churches. Sometimes it seems as if they could still be medieval settlements, until you see the cars or satellite dishes. In the bigger cities, run down apartment blocks are everywhere and on the outskirts there are often vast abandoned factories and constructions.
It sometimes feels like the land that time forgot. Farmers in the fields seem to affirm it. A few use tractors in their vast fields, but most have horse drawn ploughs or hand implements to work small plots. And it all seems very natural in the hazy summer heat.
